Early Life/Basic Facts

Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas on July 24th, 1897.  She struggled with her home life in her early years because her father was an alcoholic and came very close to hurting her at one point.

Amelia was also an author.  She published two books in her lifetime: The Fun of It: Random Records of My Own Flying and of Women in Aviation â€‹and 20 Hrs., 40 Min.: Our Flight in the Friendship.  20 Hrs., 40 Mins. was a story of the flight across the Atlantic that Amelia was on.  She was the first woman to be present on the trip.

Amelia was married to George P. Putnam in February of 1931.  Amelia was opposed to getting married for a long portion of her life but eventually agreed to marry Putnam.  He proposed many times before Amelia said yes.  Putnam had been Amelia's manager for a couple of years before they were married and they knew each other very well.
